Johan tho Subern was born about 1633 (estimate) in Vollerbenhof Gösling, in Bauerschaft Pye, Kirchspielvogtei Wallenhorst, Amt Iburg, Fürstbistum Osnabrück, Heiliges Römisches Reich, son of Goßlich zu Sübern and his wife Anna Mosting.^[1]

On 31 March 1652 the pastor of Wallenhorst listed whether the parish's residents went to Easter Communion, thereby creating the first census of the parish. The residents of the Goßeling tho Subern farm, family members and workers alike went to receive Easter communion in the church of St. Alexander in Wallenhorst and were listed as follows:^[1]

• Goßeling tho Subern (his father),
• JJohan, Goßeling et Jurgen filii (himself and his brothers),
• Anna et Gerdrut filiae (his sisters).

On 30 June 1693 Joan to Süberen was a witness in the marriage ceremony of his sister Catharina Gertrudis zu Sübern and Johan Rötger in St. Alexander, Wallenhorst.^[2]
